The first child, Johann Peter, was born 11 days after the marriage of Mararethe and Hermann.

The name of the second child "Catherine" is curious. An 1842 birth record was found in Spenge for Anna Margarethe Dickenhorst, and a passenger list record was found for A. E. age 9 in 1851, and a confirmation for Anna Margarethe Ilsabein in 1855 (below) but the marriage record on 20 Nov 1860 is for Andrew Vegele and Catherine Dickenhost [sic] in Lafayette. This is curious since there was a third daughter named Catherine who died in St. Louis, soon after the family landed. However curious the marriage and 1870 census record are for "Catherine", it is clear that it must be this child. It is certain that this Anna Margarethe/Catherine dies by the time of her mother's death on 24 July 1873, as she is not listed on the death record -- St. John Church death record in Concordia: Margarethe Dickenhorst Menkhoff, geb Grungras, born 21 Aug 1820 in Westfalen Prussia. Married Heinrich Menkhoff, Mother of 4 daughters, 1 son, d. 24 July 1873 52Y 11M 2D, bur 25 July. 2 Cor 5:45. -- the four daughters are Maria, Caroline, Sophia and Emma. There is no other Catherine Dickenhorst who could be married in Lafayette County MO other than this daughter of Herman and Margarethe. (Although her aunt is also a Catherine Dickenhorst, married to Fr. William, Frederick is still living in 1860 -- he is killed by bushwackers in 1864 and also buried at St. John Cemetery -- so the 1860 Catherine Dickenhorst marriage is not for this older Catherine Bokstiel Dickenhorst.)

Second Catherine: no birth record found. C. E. Dickenhorst (female) age 3 on the Oct 25, 1851 ship list. St. Louis burial: Catharine Dickenhorst died 26 Apr 1852.

Obituary of H. H. Dickenhorst (1852-1914) [uncited clipping] "H. H. Dickenhorst was born on the Atlantic Ocean Sep 12, 1852. His mother and father having been 6 months crossing the Atlantic from Germany. The family moved to Lafayette Co. Mo. immediately and made their home on a farm. Married: Emily smith of Concordia, Mo. May 6, 1878. They moved to Troy, Mo. He went to Herbert Springs, Ak [sic] and lived there until his death, July 1, 1914. Three sons survive him, Walter, Ervin and Richard and his widow. A son Herbert died Sep 4 1904. Member of the Methodist Church." Tombstones: Fannie Witt Dickenhorst Dec 13 1888, Nov 24 1971; Ervin Case Dickenhorst June 8, 1890, Mar 21 1867; Dickenhorst headstone at end of following stones: Walter H. June 12 1879, Jan 14, 1958; Emily mother May 15, 1859, July 12, 1930; H. H. father Sep 12 1852, July 1, 1914; Herbert P. Sep 11 1885, Sep 8, 1904 -- ("Gone But Not Forgotten" vol 9 page 38, Troy City Cem.). Note: although all of these sources say he was born in 1852, I am certain that he was actually born in 1851 as that is the ship record. Family stories (by phone from R. W. Dickenhorst in 2002) confirm Henry was born on board ship, as also documented in his obituary and (most of the) census records. The newspaper clipping of the voyage states it was 49 days, not six months -- perhaps it took six months including travel to Bremen, and travel from New Orleans to Concordia, MO.
Walter Dickenhorst 1886 accident -- Journal of Davy K, Capps, written 1874-1885 -- "Fatal Accident Aug 31, 1886. At about 2:30 Tuesday Afternoon Charley Collbert, son of Capt. Colbert, Walter Dickenhorst & Marshal Perkens were in Harts elevator at the depot when Charley jumbed in to the bin while the wheat was running in to a car. He was quickly covered by the mass of wheat & was smothered to derath. He was extricated by cutting a hole in the floor of the bin. Dolly Hart in his efforts to rescue Charley fainted twice and is utterly prostrated as this goes to press. Henry Dickenhorst also exerted himself to the utmost. Hart recovered the same day."
Obituary for Richard Walter Dickenhorst (1923-2003) -- Dr. Richard Walter Dickenhorst of Monroe, a radiologist, died Sunday. The funeral is 2 pm today at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Monroe. Burial is at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. (The News-Star, Monroe LA, 1/15/2002, p.10)
Obituary for Jean Clerget Dickenhorst (1920-2003) -- Mrs. Jean Clerget Dickenhorst was born May 30, 1920, the youngest of four children of Francis Xavier and Ocie Woods Clerget in Morrilton, AR. As a beautiful young woman working in her community bank, Jean fell in love with the president's son, Richard Walter Dickenhorst. They were married on Christmas Eve, 1946. After Dick completed medical school at the University of Arkansas, they moved to San Diego, CA, where he served in the US Navy and shortly thereafter they welcomed their daughter, Sherry Jean Dickenhorst. The family moved to Shreveport, LA, for Dick's Radiology residency and, having fallen in love with Louisiana, made their home in Monroe in 1952. For Jean, creating a beautiful home and dedicating quality time to family and friends was a passion. Her mastery of Louisiana cuisine - particularly her famous southern quail breakfasts - were unsurpassed in Ouachita Parish and led Dick to proclaim with pride that "She was the best cook in all of Louisiana." The friendships the Dickenhorsts made in Monroe were cherished and enduring. In 1973 and 1978 Jean entered a new stage of her life as a doting grandmother, blessed with the arrivals of Ashley and Richard; Jean's last days were brightened by her great grandson William and the anticipation of her second great grandson due in January. Jean and her family were deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Richard W. Dickenhorst, Jean's husband of fifty-six years. Jean Dickenhorst is survived by a daughter, Sherry Spencer and husband Rand; and their children, Richard Spencer and Ashley Leake and her husband Sam; and their son, William, all of Dallas, TX. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM Wednesday until service time at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. The News-Star, Monroe LA, Page 6, Tuesday, October 7, 2003

Miscellaneous. Marriage record for Herman's brother Fred: Frederick Wilhelm Diekenhorst [sic] to Catharina Maria Bokstiel, 27 April 1853 (Lafayette County, MO).
One other unknown Dickenhorst record found: Civil War List, Kewaunee County, WI. Lawrence Dickenhorst, private, company A, enlisted 8/15/1862; killed 4/30/1864 at Jenkins' Ferry (Arkansas). No relationship to this Lawrence has been determined. He was not located on the 1860 census.
August Godt came to America from Brockhagen, and settled in Wright City, MO. He visited his homeplace, visiting sisters Lena Godt and Frau Dickenhorst.
Catherine Eleonora Godt (christened 8/19/1866) married Henrich Dickenhorst -- the Godts lived in Brockhagen, Germany.
Johann "Friedrich" Ludewig Frerking, born 1812, married Caroline Dieckenhorst, born 1809 -- married in Germany. She died 4/6/1878; he died 4/17/1869 in Concordia, MO. They had 5 children. Emigrated 1843-1845 (after marriage and with one child -- passenger list record not found) -- prior to Fred Dickenhorst in 1847 and Herman Dickenhorst in 1851. It is assumed that Caroline, just 3 years older than Fred and 9 years older than Herman, is a cousin, and furthermore that Fred chose Concordia because the Frerkings had settled there. Johann was born in Esperke, Hannover, Germany.
Apenge would have fallen under the Counts of Ravensberg.

* Note: Besides these six children of Caroline Dickenhorst known from the census data, there are six children who died young, based on her response of mother of 13, 7 still living on the 1900 census -- identified from the death records below. Note, one child is yet unidentified -- not on the 1880 or 1900 census, but Caroline answered that seven were still alive, so it is likely a child who was born ~1881 and is working outside the home or already married. Note, while the death records state Alfred and Minna died, and these were the only to birth records 1880-1895 with those names, this cannot be right unless they happened to wait a long time to christen Mina -- Alfred's christening follows hers by just five months.... this only affects their birthdates, as the death records are incontrovertible.
