Notes: William (47) and Abigail Britton Howsmon (47) have seven children at home: John 23, Isaac 20, Mary 18, Joseph 15, Frances 12, James 10 and Martha 8. Son Charles died in 1825 at age 1. In 1830, only their oldest daughter Letticia (26) is married—to John Britton—and she lives nearby with three young children and an unknown female teen (probably helping her out with the children). Letticia’s children are the only grandchildren Abigail will know; she dies next year, November 26, 1831. The three oldest children, John, Isaac and Mary, get married in the next three years, leaving William with four children at home. He will marry Frances Wrenn (Roberts/Talbot), supposedly on December 19, 1833, although she is not on the 1840 census.

Abigail’s family lives 65 miles away in Ross County and 125 miles away in Pickaway County, but William’s family is all close by in Madison: Isaac (40), Mary Reeves (36), and Margaret McClimans (26), as well as brother Jacob (35) whose household includes William’s mother Martha Frost Howsmon (71) and William’s sisters Frances (44) and Hannah (32) plus Martha Rayburn (24) who was widowed just last year with apparently three young children. Martha does not remarry for eight years; Jacob, Frances and Hannah never marry.
