Dwelling #11, Family #11
Hay, Thomas, age 70, Male, White, occupation: farmer, value of real estate-$4500, value of personal property-$500, born in Scotland, parents foreign-born, cannot read or write*, eligible to vote
---, Sarah, age 70, Female, White, occupation: keeping house, born in North Carolina, cannot read or write*
Patterson, Daniel, age 26, Male, White, occupation: domestic servant, born in N.Y., cannot read or write*, eligible to vote
---------, Margaret, age 25, Female, White, occupation: keeping house, born in Ind., (did not mark, but should have: father foreign-born), cannot read or write*
Hay, Silas, age 16, Male, White occupation: at home, born in Ind., cannot read or write*, in school this year
Berlin, George, age 23, Male, White, occupation: domestic servant, born in Penn., cannot read or write*, eligible to vote

Notes: Thomas is an active farmer into his 70’s, although it looks like he does get plenty of help from his grandson, son-in-law and I assume George Berlin too works on the farm. Daughter Margaret married Daniel Patterson four years ago, but they will be divorced by the next census. Thomas and Sarah’s grandson Silas has lived with them since his mother (Elizabeth Crawford Hay) died when he was three; his father and siblings live in Indiana. *The enumerator marked almost everyone in the county illiterate—surely a mistake.
