The earliest records -- birth, marriage and death -- in Gedern start in 1674; however, the family books ("summary") lists births as early as the 1640s. Although no family book entry was found for Girtraud, it is thought from her marriage record that she was from Gedern anyway. It should be noted that some records are illegible or water-damaged, so the information is to be taken as a best interpretation, and is subject to correction. Some birthdates may be christening dates, and some death dates may be burial dates -- usually within 1-3 days. Gertraud Ruppert's father Hans was the owner of the Castle Mill (source).

The earliest record for Stiebeling family found in Gedern goes back to Adam Stiebeling's marriage in 1680; it is amazing that these old record books still exist. There is no family summary record for Adam either, but from the marriage record, it appears that Adam was also from Gedern. The birthdates for Adam and Girtraud were derived from their death records. The record books are kept by year, so the individual records will list month and day only, with year known from the book. Adam Stiebeling "arrived with the descendants of the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode (who also possessed Gedern and lived in Gedern’s Castle), from Wernigerode to Gedern and was their Court Master Baker" (source).

Note: The records are incomplete, and have been culled from both birth and death records, so children are likely to be missing. The older records are hard to read, and have often been damaged, so names could have been overlooked. Stillborns are usually not included in the birth record books. It appears that the early family book summaries only included children who lived long enough to be married, whereas the later family books included all babies; only Johann Christoph and Anna Margarethe had family books. Rupperl is the best guess for Girtraud's name -- she is often listed as Gerda in the records, either an abbreviation or a nickname.

In 2008 fellow genealogist and Stiebeling descendant, John Illenberger, was in contact with a fellow genealogist and Stiebeling descendant in Germany, Erwin Diehl, who confirmed this information and added much more in his 2008 letter. RIP John Illenberger (10/27/1931-9/26/2010) and George Gilliland (9/28/1939-7/2/2011) -- I would never have made it so far on the Stiebeling ancestry without the two of you; I miss you both. Donna Hay, 2011

Per John Illenberger: "As you'll recall, the Stiebelings arrived in Gedern with the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode. Wernigerode was the county seat, located in the Harz region, now a part of present-day Saxony-Anhalt. Anyhow, the Counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode acquired Gedern in 1535. I don't think the year had been specified earlier. Apparently the Stiebelings came from Wernigerode to Gedern about 1535. This is an educated guess, since we'll probably never find records that far back. Many records were lost during the Thirty Years' War. From Wernigerode to Gedern is 289 Km by modern highways - about 3 hours 12 minutes."
