From this website: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/r/i/Charles-P-Price/FILE/0013text.txt

This information is provided here in its entirety from the website to examine the times and residences of the people that our ancestor John Maiden (~1750 PA/Wales-1820s Iredell,NC) knew. The Butler Family of Iredell has ties to Surry,NC and Goochland,VA as did the Passwater family (see notes at end). Also, it is of particular interest that this William Butler was one of the major leaders of the Regulators Movement; it is unknown if John Maiden and/or his father were involved with this movement or not.

1. EDMUND1 BUTLER was born in ?Ireland 1695-1704. EDMUND died 1747 Goochland, Virginia, USA, at 52 years of age. He married FRANCES COOKE. FRANCES is the daughter of ABRAHAM COOKE Sr and MARTHA CLAYTON (CLEATON). FRANCES became the mother of Aaron Butler ca 1726. FRANCES became the mother of Frances Butler ca 1727?. FRANCES became the mother of Gen John Butler ca 1728. FRANCES became the mother of Pvt Edmund Butler II in ?Goochland Co, VA, ca 1729. Butler: "in Goochland County, Virginia or New Kent, Co./Hanover Co., Virginia?" FRANCES became the mother of NANCY ANN BUTLER Goochland, Virginia, USA, 1738-1740. The Edmund-Frances Butler evidence lists two Ann or Nancy Butlers with different birthplaces and resp birthdates of 1738 and <1753. See text. One source lists birth place as Halifax Co, NC. I am following Pamela Butler's evidence principally here. FRANCES became the mother of Capt William Butler in Virginia, USA, ca 1740. Pamela Butler: Goochland Co/Cumberland Co, VA FRANCES became the mother of Hannah Butler ca 1741. FRANCES became the mother of Butler ca 1744. EDMUND immigrated, ca 1717. Destination: destination unknown. EDMUND became the father of Aaron Butler ca 1726. EDMUND became the father of Frances Butler ca 1727?. EDMUND became the father of Gen John Butler ca 1728. EDMUND became the father of Pvt Edmund Butler II in ?Goochland Co, VA, ca 1729. Butler: "in Goochland County, Virginia or New Kent, Co./Hanover Co., Virginia?" At 43 years of age EDMUND became the father of NANCY ANN BUTLER Goochland, Virginia, USA, 1738-1740. The Edmund-Frances Butler evidence lists two Ann or Nancy Butlers with different birthplaces and resp birthdates of 1738 and <1753. See text. One source lists birth place as Halifax Co, NC. I am following Pamela Butler's evidence principally here.

EDMUND became the father of Capt William Butler in Virginia, USA, ca 1740. Pamela Butler: Goochland Co/Cumberland Co, VA EDMUND became the father of Hannah Butler ca 1741. EDMUND became the father of Butler ca 1744. He made a will Goochland, Virginia, USA, 27 Apr 1747. Pamela Butler cites: Book 5, p 342, Under Goochland County, Parish of Southam, Virgina, General Index to Deeds, Wills, etc.: Parish of Southam, Goochland Co, VA, 1747 Sep. EDMUND's will was probated Goochland, Virginia, USA, 17 Sep 1747. Main source here is: "Edmund Butler and Frances Cooke", by Pamela Butler, downloaded from Family Tree maker's Genealogy Site, 8 Sep 1998. The URL is http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/u/t/Pamela- Butler. I re-downloaded on 31 Mar 2001. The name is now "Edmund Butler and Frances Cooke of Colonial Virginia" (updated 5 Sep 2000).

From Pamela Butler: "Edmund "E" Butler was born 1694-1704 in Ireland?, and died September 17, 1747 in Goochland County, Southam Parish, Virginia/Buried on family farm. He married Frances Cooke Bef. 1725 in New Kent County, Virginia?, daughter of Abraham Cooke andMartha Clayton."
Also: "Edmund Butler came to Virginia from Ireland about 1717, died in Goochland County, Virginia in 1747. He married Frances Cooke and had 6 living children: Aaron Butler married Susanna Williams?, Edmund Butler married Mary Street, Nancy (Ann) Butler married John Lowe, John Butler married Anne Armstrong & an unknown female married William Watson Jr. The family migrated to Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina & Georgia."

Also (from .../GENE4-0004.html): "Nancy's brothers [ie, NANCY ANN BUTLER] all served in the Revolution except for Aaron who died in 1776-1777. John was a Brigadier General of the Militia in North Carolina. Edmund fought in Georgia and Nancy's brother, William was notable as a "Regulator" in North Carolina and received land grants in North Carolina AND Edgefield County, South Carolina for his wartime services. William was to die there November 1790 as per an oath given by William's widow, Phoebe Childers Butler in the early 1800's. John Lowe also received a land grant in George for military service. He and Nancy moved to Georgia possibly during the war or shortly thereafter." Webb 1978 shows family tree (on back side of record) with James Butler father of Nancy Ann Butler, and William Butler father of James Butler. But this cannot be the James (son of William who is married to Charity Lowe). Hence Webb 1993 must be wrong on this issue.

EDMUND BUTLER and FRANCES COOKE had the following children:

2 i. Aaron2 Butler was born ca 1726. Aaron died 1776-1777 at 50 years of age. He married Susanna Williams?.
3 ii. Frances Butler was born ca 1727?.
4 iii. Gen John Butler was born ca 1728. He married Ann Armstrong. Pamela Butler evidence cites a 18 Mar 1825 deposition showing William Butler's relationship to his Uncle John (Brigadier General): "State of Carolina, Iredell County This day came before me William Harbin one of the acting Justices of Peace for said and after being duly sworn, deposit and saith(?) that he has been acquainted with William Butler from his infancy and was also was acquainted with his father William Butler and his mother Feeby Butler, formerly Feeby Childers, and formerly was acquainted with General John Butler of Orange County and the Hawfields and always understood that General John and William Butler were brothers and does believe that William Butler of this county is a son of the said William and Feeby Butler and that the first acquaintance I had of the above designated was an infant at the breast and the former William was a citizen of Randolph County and lived on the waters of Deep River and he thinks that it was 1770 or 1771 to the best of his recollection and belief sworn to and ascribed this 18th March, 1825 Signed John Maiden before me William Harbin J.P."
5 iv. Pvt Edmund Butler II was born in ?Goochland Co, VA ca 1729. Butler: "in Goochland County, Virginia or New Kent, Co./Hanover Co., Virginia?" Edmund died 1801 in Hancock, Georgia, USA, at 72 years of age. Cites "Hancock County Georgia Abstracts of Wills, p 7, Will Book B, p 11" He married Mary Street in Virginia, USA, bef 1751. Mary is the daughter of William Street. Was in Revolutionary War from Campbell Co VA. Pamela Butler's evidence lists these children: John Lowe, Edmund III, Mary R, Hannah, William {Capt}, Henry Lovick Butler.

Webb 1993, in addition to the info listed under husband JOHN LOWE: "RESEARCHER: Doris Ellis, Box 96, Yale, OK 74085 in 1972. I have tried to contact her several times with no luck. She is related to Mary Ann Gililland, sister to our John. I have a copy of a letter that she wrote to Mrs. Roy Castner, Box 134, Kirtland, N M listing children and their spouses, of William Lowe and Margaret Fair found in Franklin, Simpson Co., KY. Marriage of John Gililland and Agnes Johnson Lowe is found in Logan Co., KY records. She has the Revolutionary War Pension Appl from Surrey Co., N C for William Lowe. He moved from Surrey to Pendleton dist, N C to Warren Co., KY which became Simpson Co. in 1819." Pamela Butler evidence: "... Barnabus married 2) Pamela Childers on February 2, 1843 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas. ..." CAUTION: (from Pamela Butler evidence), attributed to Pamela Hazelett-Burleson: ""Another" Nancy Butler was born September 27, 1765 in Edgefield, South Carolina. This Nancy Butler died July 28, 1854 in South Carolina. This Nancy Butler was the daughter of Major James Butler (b. abt 1737, d October 7, 1781 in Mount Willing, Near Clouds Creek, Edgefield Co., SC) and Mary Elizabeth Simpson. Died July 28, 1854 in South Carolina. This family all lived in Edgefield County, South Carolina. "This" Nancy Butler also had a brother named William; Capt. William Butler b December 17, 1758 in Prince William Co., Va. And died November 15, 1821 in Edgefield County, SC. This family from South Carolina was very prominent in military and politics etc., in South Carolina. They are directly related to Jane Butler who married Augustine Washington, father of George Washington. "Two Nancys" having "two brothers named William" and both brothers dying in Edgefield County, South Carolina has caused me a lot of time and grief. "This" Nancy from South Carolina married Elisha Brooks, Lt. abt 1787. He was born April 16, 1761 and died November 29, 1847. They had the following children: William Butler Brooks, John Wesley Borrks and Edna Brooks. The reason that I'm going into details is because in numberous family charts this Nancy Butler of South Carolina ends up married to John Lowe (the one married to "our" Nancy) and it makes a mess of the family tree." + 7 vi. Capt William Butler was born ca 1740.
8 vii. Hannah Butler was born ca 1741. She married Joseph Barksdale. 9 viii. Butler was born ca 1744. She married William Watson Jr.

John Lowe, they moved to North Carolina, then South Carolina and finally to Georgia where John received a land grant for serving in the Revolutionary War. Many of the family remain in the South, including Texas. This family had many members in politics in Georgia and also prominent Judges, Attorneys and Doctors, etc. It appears the Lowes were well loved by the rest of the family as many used the middle name of Lowe & frequently the first name of Nancy. The Lowes may have been the first ones in the family to migrate south from Virginia." Also: "John was a Pvt. in Artillery under Elijah Clark during the war. Later information gives his rank as a Lieutenant. [There is another John Lowe, a lt., who applied for pension, from Randolph Co, NC. He is not ours.] John Lowe was a Pvt. and used the source of, "The Revolutionary services of John Lowe are on file in the office of Secretary of State of the State of Georgia. He and Nancy moved to Georgia possibly during hte war or shortly thereafter." Also: "According to Ray Palmer of Hinds County, Mississippi, Lt. John Lowe lost his first wife, Nancy and in his old age married a second time and had one child, Aaron Lowe who had a son Aaron Lowe, Jr. of Hawkinsville, Georgia. Dr. Ebenezer Warren, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta and Macon, Georgia was a grandson of Aaron Lowe. You may know that Dr. L. B. Warren, an eloquent Baptist preacher, now at Crescent, Georgia (1970s), is his son. All of this information was furnished by Ray Palmer and from his memory August 10, 1978." Webb: "John Lowe was among a group of 'Regulators' in Alamance, Guilford and Randolph counties N C who appealed the tax levy to the Colonial Assembly. In May 1771 Gov. Tyron ordered these men fired upon. To escape being taken prisoner they fled N C. Two sets of brothers were associated with these Regulators: William and John Butler and John and William Lowe, our ancestors. Some became political rebels and some religious rebels." [I believe this refers to John's father John Lowe.] Webb 1993: "This information compiled by: Elaine Perkins, 15800 Hamilton Pool, Austin, TX 78738. 1992. In his 1825 deposition, John Maiden (~1750 PA/Wales-1820s Iredell,NC) mentions the following:

--he has been acquainted with William Butler (1770 Rowan,NC-1833 Iredell,NC) since infancy

--he has been acquainted with William's parents - Capt William (1740 Goochand,VA-1790 Edgield,SC) and his wife Phoebe Childers (~1740-1826 Simpson,KY) They moved to NC circa 1767, but described above as seeming to move NC-VA-NC-KY-SC-VA. perhaps due to confusion by the several genealogists researching this line, or perhaps they truly were this mobile.

--he was acquainted with Gen John Butler (~1728-1820Washington,GA) formerly of Orange County. There is no indication that Gen. John Butler ever lived in Iredell/Rowan, NC.

It is of interest that the Butlers have ties to both Orange County,NC (the home of the other Maiden famiy) and Goochland County,VA (where William Passwater was mentioned as unfit for duty in the militia in 1755). This William Passwater may be the same as married Hannah Pezaza in SC in 1740, so perhaps born circa 1720, and thought to be the father of Samuel Passwater who shows up on the 1790 census in Surry County,NC.

This overview of the Butler family underscores how much our ancestors moved in the 1700s, and suggests that William Passwater moving from Charleston SC in 1740 to Goochland VA in 1755 to Surry NV in 1790 is not unreasonable; the Butler family has a similar migration pattern. It could even be that knowing the Butlers might be a link to how John's son Andrew Maiden (~1775 NC-1840s IN) of Iredell County met his wife Mary Passwater (~1780 NC-1830s IN) of Surry County.

Another note is that this William Butler family that John Maiden knew at least by the late 1760s was heavily involved with the Regulators movement (as noted in the bolded print above). It is unknown whether John Maiden (and perhaps his father as well) was involved with or sympathized with this movement, but it is certainly possible he was -- see more.

Regulator Movement in mid-eighteenth-century North Carolina was a rebellion initiated by residents of the colony's inland region, or backcountry, who believed that royal government officials were charging them excessive fees, falsifying records, and engaging in other mistreatments. The movement's name refers to the desire of these citizens to regulate their own affairs. An unfair system of taxation prevailed under which less productive land, such as that in the western and Mountain regions, was taxed at the same rate as the more fertile, level soil of the Coastal Plain. These and other hardships contributed to the Regulators' feelings of sectional discrimination and deep distrust of authorities rooted in eastern North Carolina. Led by men such as Rednap Howell, James Hunter, and Herman Husbandóconsidered the movement's chief spokesmanóthe Regulators organized a resistance to these abuses, first through protest and ultimately through violence.

...Residents of the frontier counties of Anson, Orange, and Granville (much larger then than today) began to protest publicly in 1764. Many appointed, rather than elected, officials became targets of numerous threats and violence, including sheriffs, tax collectors, registrars, court clerks, and judges. ... -- Encyclopedia of North Carolina, UNC Press

The movement culminated in violence on May 16, 1771, west of Hillsborough in Oange County, when the Regulators taunted the state militia with cries of "fire and be damned." The militia did fire, and afterwards proceeded to execute 12 of their 14 prisoners as well. To quiet matters down, Governor Tryon now offered amnesty to those who would swear an oath of alliegance to the royal government, and within six weeks, 6,409 had complied with its terms. Most of the leaders of the Regulator Movement were dead, in excile, or in hiding; some moved away. "The coming of the American Revolution soon erased the differences between the two groups of Carolinians. Many men from both sides joined in the fight for independence from Britain and served together in a common cause."
